Coffin Island 5K postponed due to lack of registrants

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - An organizer with the Folly Beach Sea & Sand Festival says Saturday morning's sixth annual Coffin Island 5K was postponed due to the lack of people who registered.

The race is a family-fun, pirate-themed 5K with a prize for the best dressed pirate.

Ben Bounds, with Follywood Rocks, said there were less than 20 people registered for the race as of Thursday night.

According to Bounds, the registration for the race was done by two companies.

One company notified people Friday morning about the postponement, and has already refunded the entrance fee. He said the other company did not notify their registrants.

On the event's Facebook page, a Thursday night post reads, "The Coffin Island 5K Beach Run has been postponed indefinitely. We hope to announce the new date as soon as next week."

Several people turned out early Saturday morning for the race, only to find out it had been canceled.

A spokesperson with the City of Folly Beach tweeted on Twitter, "No idea why it was canceled. No word around the island the last few days about it either. Too bad..."

Bounds said they have never had less than 75 people pre-register for the event.

There's no word yet on when that race will be rescheduled.
