CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A piano arrived as a special delivery for Simmons Pinckney Middle School Friday morning.
The instrument was donated to the school's music department as it prepares for its school orchestra's first year, and the piano will help build the program.
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg helped deliver the piano and joined the kids in playing.
"It's critical to have the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic," Mayor Tecklenburg said. "But the cultural arts and I think music in particular enriches our lives and makes it even better for kids to learn."
"It was the arts that changed my life," interim principal Nathan Nelson, said. "Research shows that the arts makes a difference in academics as well, and so it just opens up our students to a whole new avenue of opportunity."
Fox Music House and The RiverDogs donated the piano. The instrument is the same one the mayor played last week at the RiverDogs opening game.
