WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - The coroner's office has identified a man killed in one of four Walterboro shootings that happened between Friday and Monday morning.
Authorities say 23-year-old Ramone Varner of Walterboro died from a fatal shooting that happened at 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Officers responded to a reported shooting in the 100 block of Lewis Street where a woman said she and her boyfriend were asleep when they heard a loud knocking on their door followed by the sound of several gunshots. The victim told police several unknown men then entered her home and exchanged gunfire with her boyfriend.
Police say her boyfriend was hit several times. Police say one of the intruders yelled he was hit during the exchange of gunfire and they all ran from the residence.
Her boyfriend was later pronounced dead at the scene by Colleton County Fire and Rescue and the Colleton County Coroner's Office, police say.
It was the fourth shooting incident that occurred since Friday, she said.
The first occurred on the 500 block of Sweat Street Friday at approximately 12:30 a.m., where a women told police she was inside her home watching television and heard gunfire outside. Officers recovered shell casings and spotted bullet holes in the victim's home and damage to windows and doors, Stivender said.
The victim told police she did not know of anyone who would want to hurt her.
The second incident occurred Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m. Officers responded to the 400 block of Whitsell Street at the Lincoln Apartments were a victim reported her vehicle had been struck by gunfire. She said she was not inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Less than two hours later, at approximately 7:13 p.m., officers responded to a third incident in the 300 block of Lockhart Street. A victim who had been wounded told police he was standing in the yard of a home when several unknown men began shooting into the crowd. He said as he was fleeing, he was struck by gunfire in the left foot.
Police say he was transported by personal vehicle to Colleton County Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.
Witnesses reported several men were seen fleeing the area on foot shortly after the shooting was reported. Officers recovered several shell casings on the ground at that scene, Stivender said.
Stivender says investigators have not been able to confirm the motive behind any of the shootings, but are actively investigating any potential connection.
