WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Design Review Board took a step forward to bring a new retail space in a West Ashley Shopping Center. That space may be the first of a major makeover of the Ashley Landing Shopping Center off Sam Rittenberg.
"West Ashley is a wonderful place to live and I think we need more revitalization," West Ashley resident, Kay Parnell said.
Many people at the center say they want more stores with more stability.
"It's grown and changed and things have come and gone and it would be nice if we had something that was going to stay," she said.
If you drive by the shopping center on Sam Rittenberg you can see empty retail spaces, but the city of Charleston is looking to change things up in more than one way. A new retail space planned for just more than 10,000 square feet could go next to the Starbucks. In addition, the entire Ashley Landing Shopping Center could be revitalized over time.
"It would be great for the overall economy in the area and just bring people into the community," West Ashley resident, Gail Donaldson said.
Faison Enterprises of Charlotte owns the outparcel of land for the new proposed development. They haven't released information about possible tenants, but design plans indicate it can hold more than one retail space.
"In addition I would like to see more sophisticated stores, different stores not the same ole same ole all the time," West Ashley Resident, Miro Kanowick.
Part of the city's plan is to bring new development to West Ashley. Some residents go to other parts of town to get what they need.
"Summerville has more than we have, and Mt. Pleasant of course," Parnell said.
"It's not as vibrant as it used to be," Donaldson said.
The new retail building is one of many projects in the works to revitalize West Ashley.
The Design Review Board also granted preliminary approval for construction of a Home2 Suites Hotel to go on Savannah Highway.
