CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC/AP) - The friend of the suspected AME church shooter is expected to take a plea deal.
Joey Meek is facing federal charges for lying to authorities about what he knew of Dylann Roof's alleged plan to kill people at Mother Emanuel in downtown Charleston last June.
Meek's plea hearing is set for Friday at 1 p.m.
Under the agreement, Meek will plead guilty to lying to authorities and failure to report a crime.
The agreement calls for a maximum sentence of five years, and a $250,000 fine.
Authorities have said Meek failed to tell investigators all he knew about Roof's plans to shoot nine black parishioners at Emanuel AME Church.
Roof is charged with nine counts of murder in state court and with hate crimes and other charges in federal court.
Meek had been set to go on trial later this year.
Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said she has not decided if she will pursue Meek's cooperation in Roof's state trial in which Wilson is seeking the death penalty.
