SLED asked to investigate incident with off-duty Charleston PD officer, bicyclist

Officials with the Charleston Police Department say they have asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate an incident between an off-duty police officer and a bicyclist.

According to CPD officials, the incident began as a verbal encounter and then escalated into a physical encounter between the off-duty officer, identified as Kevin Medert, and the civilian after a collision between the off-duty officer’s personal vehicle and the civilian’s bicycle.

A police report states that around 12:30 p.m. on April 18 an officer responded to the intersection of St. Philip and George streets in reference to a collision between a car and bicycle and an altercation between the involved parties.

Police say a 32-year-old man on a bicycle said he was riding the wrong way on St. Philip Street when he collided with a red Infinity G35 driven by Medert.

The man told the responding officer he believed the vehicle had intentionally driven toward him and left him very little room along side the curb.

The man reported that he was uninjured and wanted to leave after the collision, but Medert grabbed his backpack and would not let him leave.

The man said he told Medert not to touch him and pushed him away, but Medert grabbed him by the backpack again and forced him to the ground.

A police report states the man said he then pushed himself up off the ground and threw a punch at Medert.

CPD officials said the altercation ended when College of Charleston Public Safety officers arrived.

The responding CPD officer said he saw a scuff mark on the left corner of Medert's vehicle and another one on the driver side door.

A police report states a SC Highway Patrol trooper arrived on scene and both the man on the bicycle and Medert declined to fill out an accident form.

Authorities said Medert was not in uniform at the time of the incident.

Medert has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

CPD officials say Medert has been with the department since April 1, 2013.
