MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Four survivors from one of the most famous naval battles in history will share their memories during a free program at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.
During a special event on Thursday evening, the veterans will recount their experience of the World War II Battle of Midway on board the USS Yorktown CV-5. That aircraft carrier, a precursor to the USS Yorktown CV-10 in Charleston Harbor, sank during the 1942 naval battle. Three Japanese bombs and four torpedoes hit the carrier and the crew spent hours floating in the Pacific Ocean, waiting to be rescued.
The "Mayday at Midway" symposium will be part of a Patriots Point's "Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things" education series held inside the Smokey Stover Theater on the USS Yorktown. It starts at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 28. Admission and parking for the event are free.
