NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Bond was set at $100,000 for the suspect in fatal accident involving a moped on the Northbridge in March.

Damein Birch, 18, turned himself in to investigators Tuesday, North Charleston Police say. Birch was charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury.

He faced a judge in Bond Court Wednesday morning.

Officers say the accident happened around 11 p.m. on Monday, March 7.  Leroy Snipe of North Charleston, 61, died from blunt trauma to the head, the Charleston County Coroner's Office says.

A traffic incident report states the suspect's vehicle and Snipe's moped were traveling northbound on Cosgrove Avenue when the suspect's vehicle struck the moped in the rear, causing the moped driver to be ejected.

According to police, the moped was pushed for some distance until it became dislodged from the suspect's vehicle; authorities say the moped was dragged onto the eastbound I-26 on ramp.

Investigators say the suspect left the scene and failed to render aid or give information.

Snipe was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in critical condition following the incident, where he later died.
