CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston County judge set bond for a man accused of speeding and driving recklessly before crashing his car and killing his passenger.

Roberto Lopez is charged with reckless homicide in connection with a Nov. 28 crash on Maybank Highway between Headquarters Plantation Drive and Fenwick Halle Allee on Johns Island, according to court records.

Investigators say Lopez was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper sedan on Maybank Highway at approximately 9:36 a.m., that "significantly" accelerated and was traveling "extremely fast" while traveling in the paved median separating the eastbound and westbound lanes of Maybank Highway.

Witnesses told authorities Lopez was trying to pass another vehicle in the sole westbound lane when he lost control of the car, causing it to suddenly turn left, crossing the eastbound lane where it was struck by a 2015 GMC Yukon, an affidavit states. Investigators say the truck had no time to apply its breaks and struck Lopez's car on the passenger side, which caused the death of the passenger, Santiago Sebastian.

A judge set bond for $150,000 in a Thursday hearing.
