CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston County high school school went under lockdown after a student brought a loaded gun and contraband to the school, CCSD officials say.
The student, who has not been identified, arrived at St. John's High School at 1:30 p.m., Charleston County School District spokesman Dan Head said.
School officials initiated a search of the student and found a loaded firearm and other contraband, he said.
According to the Charleston Police Department, the student is a 16 year-old male.
"The items were found in his book bag about 2 p.m. He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and simple possession of marijuana," CPD officials said."He is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center on Leeds Avenue."
CPD officials said the student was late getting to class and school officials said he smelled of marijuana as he walked through the hallway.
"A school official searched his book bag and found the weapon and marijuana," police said."The school was briefly placed on lockdown."
The school was put into a code yellow lockdown as a precaution while the school's resource officer called in additional law enforcement officers, school officials said.
The student was transported off campus by police.
