A man is in the hospital after he was stabbed late Friday night.

The victim was found lying on the ground in a parking lot in the 3400 block of Park Avenue.

Investigators said the victim told officers that a black man asked him for some change and he gave it to him. The suspect then asked for a cigarette, which the victim did not have.

The victim said the suspect used a pocket knife to stab him.

The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He was later upgraded to non-critical.

"Its heart wrenching,” Cardell Willis said. “You never want to see anyone get hurt. You want to keep everyone happy, but that’s just the energy that’s floating around right now.”

The attendant said he called 911 and sat with the victim until police arrived. The victim said the suspect followed him from a nearby liquor store.

The attendant said he fears for his safety and nothing like this has happened before.

"People are in need in desperate times and in desperate times people do desperate things,” Willis said.

Police are still searching for the suspect.
