CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The long-debated extension of I-526 has apparently hit a dead end.
After working on a local funding plan that included a combination of tolls and higher taxes, the State Infrastructure Bank Board said no; that Charleston County missed the deadline to come up with the rest of the money.
That's a victory for those who say the project will harm the environment and the quality of life on James and Johns Islands.
Those who say the project will help alleviate traffic vow to keep fighting - if not for I-526, then for the $420 million the bank board promised for the project.
This fight has been going on for years -- long enough for the price tag of this project to balloon to $725-million.
Let's hope all sides can come together, and reach a consensus to do what's best for all of Charleston.
