MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

An 18-month-old was rescued from a hot car after she became trapped when they keys were accidentally locked inside.

Memphis firefighters responded to the parking lot of Burlington Coat Factory on Winchester Road and were able to break the window to get the child out.

"I feel great now the fireman came and started working right away," the child's grandmother, Jessie Scruggs, said. "When they couldn't get my keys out they said they had to break the window, so they broke the window."

Riley, 18-months, was in the car for 15-20 minutes before firefighters were able to help her.

"I was devastated," Scruggs said. "I didn't know this car would lock all the way around."

Scruggs said she has just changed Riley's diaper when the doors locked with her on the outside.

Several fellow shoppers offered help, even trying to use a clothes hanger to try and pick the lock.

"After they couldn't get my keys out of here, they said they had to break the window. So they broke the window," Scruggs said. "They knew what they were doing.

With the heat index in the triple digits, the firefighters couldn't take a chance.

Since 1998, more than 660 children across the United States have died from heat stroke when unattended in a vehicle.
