Review board denies proposal for controversial gas station in W. Ashley

VIDEO: Controversial gas station back up for review Monday

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Design Review Board has denied a proposal for a controversial gas station in West Ashley.

Developers wanted to build the store at the site of the former Piggly Wiggly on Sumar Street.

In March, the developer withdrew the request to build the gas station at the site.

But the project went back on the agenda Monday afternoon and was denied.

Many nearby residents opposed the plans.

The original plans included a brick convenience store, gas pumps, pond, landscaping and a brick "Welcome to West Ashley" sign.

The new plans do not include bricks, the pond and the landscaping. Opponents don't want the gas station there, period.

"I just don't think it's the right next step for West Ashley at all. It's not the right gateway for our community, resident Lauren Hunt said.

"I don't think it's going to hurt anything," resident Robby Zerourer said. "What you're gonna do, we need to get gas somewhere."
