Mt. Pleasant police say new entry procedures at the South Carolina Ports Authority backed up I-526 eastbound traffic to Longpoint Road on Monday.

According to SC Ports officials, the gate system off of Longpoint Road changed over the weekend.

Motorists reported a long line of trucks at the exit.

According to motorists, traffic had been backed up for several hours.

"All commercial traffic heading towards the port is now being diverted away from the port until 7:00 p.m. this evening," Mt. Pleasant police officials say."Non-commercial traffic will be allowed down Longpoint Road towards the port as usual. If you have any issues or concerns, please contact the South Carolina Ports Authority at 843-577-8153."

SCDOT officials are urging all motorists to be aware of the congestion and traffic build up.

According to SCDOT, crews have been sent to the area to assist motorists as much as possible.

"SCDOT advises all motorists approaching that section of I-526 to slow down and use caution," officials said.
