MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Cold War experience exhibit is coming to Patriots Point that includes a close encounter with a Russian submarine.
A new high-tech exhibit opens Saturday aboard the USS Laffey. It will be located inside the ship's Combat Information Center. Groups of up to 12 people will encounter holograms of an officer and sailor reenacting the experience of tracking a Soviet submarine from the ship. The exhibit also includes radar repeaters reporting enemy movement, radio transmissions, and sounds of the ship's crew.
"We want people to leave this new exhibit with an understanding of how close we really were to a third world war, and what it was like to serve aboard a destroyer like the Laffey during the early 70's," Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum Executive Director Mac Burdette said in a release. "Lately, there has been some comparison of today's foreign relations to the Cold War. So, we think the exhibit should resonate with visitors and serve to educate new generations on the dedication and sacrifices of our service members."
This new exhibit is included in admission prices to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.
