Coroner identifies Charleston sanitation worker struck, killed by garbage truck

The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified the man struck and killed by a city garbage truck as Tyrone Comfort of Charleston, 47 years old.

Officials say Comfort was a City of Charleston sanitation worker. 

According to authorities, the incident happened in the area of Francis and Oswego streets. 

Authorities say the worker died on scene. SCHP officials say troopers are currently investigating the incident. 

Mayor John Tecklenburg released the following statement: 

"Tonight the whole City of Charleston family is grieving the loss of a Charleston Public Service Department contract worker who died this afternoon in a tragic accident involving a city Public Service Department vehicle. Few details are known at this time, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and the Charleston County coroner will have further details after the family has been notified. For now, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone touched by this terrible tragedy."
