CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Planning Commission has voted down a rezoning request for the Sergeant Jasper development.
The Beach Company recently worked with the city to come up with a concept everyone agreed on, including a development with apartments and a waterfront park.
According to company officials, the city also recommended that the planning commission approve the zoning overlay request.
The rezoning request would allow them to move forward with building plans but that has apparently been put on hold Monday night.
The Beach Company says they're "bewildered" by the vote.
"We continue to be perplexed by the actions of the groups who oppose this zoning overlay based on its 'footprint,'" said John Darby, CEO of The Beach Company. "This overlay pertains strictly to usage—not size. The size of the project is well under the density allowed by the zoning, yet these groups continue to thwart the advancement of this plan based on size."
