BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County's clerk of court announced Wednesday enhanced security measures will be implemented immediately at the county courthouse.
Clerk of Court Mary Brown said in a letter being sent to attorneys the county will be "implementing immediately the practice of screening all personnel which enter into the Courthouse."
Brown said the additional screenings will take place because "our world has become more vulnerable to acts of random violence."
The screenings and security measures are to "not only protect the safety of the people and property within and around the courts, but also the integrity of the judicial process," the letter states.
Brown also recommended lawyers, jurors and the general public should allow a few extra minutes in their schedules to accommodate the new procedures.
