Authorities: Disturbance reported at Folly Beach, Hilton Head was sonic boom, not quake

VIDEO: Disturbance felt on Folly Beach, Hilton Head was likely sonic boom, expert says

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Reports of a possible earthquake felt in Folly Beach and as far away as Hilton Head area were caused by a sonic boom, according to the town of Kiawah Island.

Kiawah Island officials say based on an investigation, the sonic boom was caused by military aircraft.

Several callers from those areas say they felt something like an earthquake Friday morning.

An official with the South Carolina Earthquake Education and Preparedness Program earlier said that while he could not immediately confirm whether an earthquake had occurred, it was "unlikely" given the area where the calls came from. He said it was probably a sonic boom.
