CWS: North Charleston water main repaired after reported leak

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston Water System say they have repaired a leak on its 48-inch water main in North Charleston near Virginia Avenue.

The main started leaking yesterday due to an air vent failure. The leak and subsequent repair work caused "cloudy" water and low pressure for some customers.

"The water main was above a thick concrete pad, which made repair work more difficult and lengthened the amount of time it took to get the fix completed," said Kin Hill, Charleston Water's CEO. "We appreciate our customers' patience with us, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

Water discoloration was reported primarily in the North Charleston area, while pressure issues were reported in West Ashley east of Highway 7, in James Island, in the Neck area of downtown and south of Montague Avenue in North Charleston, authorities say.

"If customers are still experiencing cloudy water, they should run their faucets for approximately 20 minutes, which will clear the water at their location." Charleston Water System spokesperson Matt Brady said.

Charleston Water Crews are flushing the area near the leak. If customers flush their system for 20 minutes but continue to experience discolored water, they can call Charleston Water System at (843) 727-6800.
