Ports Authority blames system outage for I-526 backup

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A South Carolina Ports Authority official says an unexpected system outage is to blame for the backup on I-526 Tuesday afternoon near the Wando Terminal.

The outage lasted for approximately 30 minutes around the lunch hour, South Carolina Ports Authority spokesperson Erin Dhand said.

"During that time, port-related traffic was queued in an orderly fashion allowing for the flow of traffic and access to/from businesses on Long Point Road," Dhand said.

The port announced last week it planned to offer extended gate hours to truck drivers Tuesday night and Wednesday night to catch up, she said.

SCDOT cameras showed traffic backing up in the eastbound lanes of I-526 near the Long Point Road exit shortly before 2 p.m. A line of 18-wheelers stretched well ahead of the exit lane.

The ports authority introduced the new advanced gate system at the Wando Welch Terminal in June. The gate system was designed to speed up turnover, but in its initial week in service, the new system caused delays that lasted hours for drivers going in and out of terminal.
