WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Colleton County deputies are investigating the theft of more than a dozen headstones or grave markers from a Walterboro cemetery.
A man told deputies on July 14 he had received a call from the Heavenly Rest Cemetery letting him know someone had stolen a granite headstone from his nephew's grave. Deputies say they were told the stolen markers were all made of granite and that none of the bronze markers had been stolen, the incident report states.
Deputies then received a call from the cemetery reporting headstones or grave markers from graves belonging to approximately 12 or 13 families had been stolen, the report states. The employee told deputies she was contacting families individually about the thefts.
The employee told deputies a grave-finding website had recently taken photos of the cemetery so there are photographs of the missing headstones. She also told deputies whoever took the gravestones "were professionals and knew what they were doing," the report states.
Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call the Colleton County Sheriff's Office at (843) 549-2211 or Crimestoppers at (843) 554-1111.
