Charleston, SC (AP) -

Despite a general slowing in the world economy, business increased at South Carolina's ports during the fiscal year that ended June 30.

The South Carolina Ports Authority reports that the container volume moving across the docks was up about 1.5 percent for the year. The authority handled the equivalent of 1.9 million 20-foot containers.

Because steel shipping containers come in different sizes, volume is generally reported in how many 20-foot containers the cargo would fill.

Ports Authority president and CEO Jim Newsome says a bright spot was that imported container volume increased about 5 percent.

He says he expects container volume to increase in the future with new larger ships and the expansion of the Panama Canal.
