Charleston police arrest downtown murder suspect

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department has arrested a 25-year-old man for a murder in downtown.

Authorities arrested 25-year-old Lucas Ward of Remount Road on Friday afternoon at a Line Street apartment. He was taken into custody with out incident.

Ward is charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was locked up at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Ward's arrest stems from an incident on June 30 at 11:30 p.m. when dispatch officials received a call about a man being shot on Flood Street.

When officers arrived they found Travis Coaxum in the back porch of a home. Coaxum died at the scene.

"Information came from members of the community who might have committed this homicide," CPD officials said."With this information and through the investigation, detectives identified Ward as the suspect."

A report states CPD detectives believe robbery was the motive for the incident.
