CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon has been selected, along with other federal and state executive law enforcement leaders and prosecutors from around the country, to join a National Use of Force Task Force.
The purpose of this Task Force is to develop a resource that provides guidance and recommendations regarding state and local law enforcement's response, investigations, and how sharing of information about officer-involved deadly use-of-force incidents.
The Task Force will be headed up by the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The resource is expected to:
- Provide guidance and recommendations for state and local law enforcement agencies to enhance and improve use-of-force investigations, also providing transparency to the public about the process.
- Support the FBI's effort to improve data collection effort related to officer-involved use of force incidents.

The spotlight and awareness of state and local law enforcement officer's use-of-force actions across the country and the pursuant investigative activity have increased over the last few years.
