JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - State health officials are taking action against a James Island assisted living facility after one of its residents was found dead in a pond.
Officials say 80-year old Marie Duddy walked out of Savannah Place in May.
Duddy suffered from severe dementia.
Her body was found the next day in a pond in the Seaside Plantation neighborhood.
DHEC spokesman Jim Beasley says the agency's investigation into Savannah Place uncovered several violations.
Beasley says the facility responded by submitting a plan addressing how those violations would be corrected, and DHEC accepted that plan.
However because of the nature and severity of the facility's violations and incidents and other factors, DHEC initiated an enforcement action against Savannah Place, Beasley said.
Beasley says that action is still pending.
