CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Tax-free weekend kicked off in South Carolina on Friday drawing busy crowds at Lowcountry stores as customers take advantage of the tax break.
"The crowds are already here, and it's going to get crazy, busier and busier as the weekend.," Mike Bowman, shopping at Tanger Outlets, said. "I was in there to get jeans, some jeggings for when it gets cold, but the line is longer than Ashley Phosphate."
From now until Sunday, shoppers can purchase certain back to school items exempt from the 6% state sales tax.
Tax-free items range from school supplies and book bags to clothing, shoes, computers and more. it's a deal that keeps registers busy.
Major box stores like Walmart are preparing for the number of customers who will walk through their doors while managers at Kohl's said they've double-teamed staff for the busy shopping weekend.
Bowman decided to focus on shoes first for his daughters, anticipating size availability to shrink as the tax-free weekend continues.
"I'm going to hit it all three days, shoes today," Bowman said. "I'll try to get an earlier jump on the shoes just because the shoes go out first, the clothes are a little earlier to find during the week," Bowman said. "It's 2016 man, parents have to be smart about it. I got six pairs of shoes for my daughters. $116 for six pairs of sneakers, that's probably one pair of sneakers normally."
According to the South Carolina Board of Economic Advisors, the savings for shoppers is expected to be more than two million dollars. some parents have a shopping strategy to take advantage of savings.
