BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A man has been charged with felony DUI after a crash that killed one on I-26 in Ridgeville Sunday night.
Officials say 34-year-old Michael Sterns was changing lanes westbound on I-26 near milemarker 190 when he hit another vehicle, killing Walter McDowell of Clinton, 46.
The incident happened around 11:30 p.m.
McDowell's vehicle ran off the road and overturned, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. Officials say he was not wearing a seat belt.
The victim was pronounced dead on scene and later identified by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office. Three other passengers in the vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sterns' vehicle ran off the road, overturned and hit a tree, SCHP officials say. He was also taken to the hospital.
Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
