CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to thousands of children Sunday at Charleston's 14th annual First Day Festival.
The annual back-to-school celebration at the South Carolina Aquarium and Charleston Maritime Center features the school supply giveaway while supplies last. It also includes games, free boat rides and a free farmers market. The First Day Festival is Sunday, August 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Liberty Square. In addition to serving as a kickoff to the new school year, it's also a good chance for kids to experience the Aquarium and Fort Sumter Museum for free from 1 to 5 p.m.
The event always draws a crowd, so expect heavy traffic in the area. Parking at the SC Aquarium and Gaillard garages will be available for only $1.
For the first time, the Lowcountry Food Bank will provide bags for families to fill with fresh fruits and vegetables at the Free Farmers Market.
The first day for Lowcountry schools is Monday, August 15.
