Officers are investigating after two women were found with multiple stab wounds outside a North Charleston apartment, and a suspect was found dead inside.

North Charleston police officers were responding to Old Pine Circle off McMillan Avenue for a suspicious person call at 2 a.m. Sunday when they were flagged down near Pine Field Court.

A witness told them there was an unresponsive female on the ground.

Officers say they found a woman suffering stab wounds to her neck, chest and leg outside an apartment on the 2000 block of Pine Field Ct. Another woman was found suffering stab wounds to her back and chest at the intersection of Pine Field Court and Old Pine Circle.

According to an incident report, officers found a man they consider to be a suspect unresponsive inside the apartment. He was later declared dead on scene by the Charleston County Coroner.

Authorities identified the man as 25-year-old Tommy Kevin Mitchell. The coroner's office says Mitchell died of asphyxia.

Officers say the women were taken to an area hospital.
