CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Attorneys for the former police officer accused of fatally shooting a motorist says newly-enhanced video proves why a police association should pay legal defense costs.
Newly-enhanced video of the fatal encounter between former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager and motorist Walter Scott was released Thursday afternoon.
Slager's federal attorney argues the video shows Scott resisting arrest and wrestling with Slager on the ground, and Scott grabbing Slager's taser. At that moment, they say, Slager made the decision to use deadly force, which is consistent with his officer training.
For that reason, his attorney's say, Slager's legal defense costs should be paid by the Southern States Police Benevolent Association.
PBA has refused to pay his legal defense stating Slager shot Scott in the back and it was not part of the job description.
