CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - We have recently received confirmation that The Medical University of South Carolina Hospital (MUSC) is suing the state's largest health insurer for not paying properly for care of Medicaid patients.
Reports state that the hospital says the BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina was supposed to pay 60 percent of the $4 million in care the hospital provided Medicare patients.
The hospital does not normally treat patients covered in the low-income BlueChoice plans, although exceptions have been made on a case-by-case basis.
According to hospital CEO Dr. Patrick Cawley, the hospital has tried to work with the company but they have not been able to reach an agreement.
The lawsuit says the insurance company met its obligations on several contracts, but is not doing so for others.
