JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - One person is dead and another injured following a shooting at a playground on James Island Thursday evening.

Charleston police officials say the incident happened at the Thomas Johnson Park on 1443 Secessionville Road.

Authorities received an emergency call about the shooting at 6:18 p.m.

According to police, one person died and another received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to MUSC.

When police arrived, witnesses on scene reported that a white pick up truck left the scene. Authorities then spotted the vehicle speeding down the road.

According to an incident report, officers were able to pull behind the vehicle, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Bresee Street and Seacroft Road.

Police say two male subjects left the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.Officers then commanded the individuals to the ground to which they complied.

An officer then approached the vehicle and saw someone, later identified as Jaquan Moore, lying on the rear seat with a gunshot wound to his right side.

"The victim appeared to be in medical distress, he was unconscious and did not utter any statements," CPD officials said.

A man said he was coaching a football game at the park when he heard around six gunshots.

Motorists reported several law enforcement vehicles as well as at least one ambulance responding to the scene.

Witnesses said they saw police and emergency vehicles rushing to the scene around 6:30 p.m.
