Coroner: 2 teens killed in single-vehicle accident in Awendaw

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story referred to the accident location as McClellanville, based on information received from the Charleston County Coroner's Office. The incident report from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office lists the location as being near Awendaw.

Two teenagers died a fatal single-vehicle high-speed accident near Awendaw on Saturday morning, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office says.

Amanda Wheeler, 17; and Matthew Gooch, 18; both of Mount Pleasant, were killed in a single-vehicle accident, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelley Kraus.

Deputies responded to Whilden Road at approximately 8:30 a.m., according to an incident report. Investigators believe the vehicle went off the roadway, turned sideways and struck a tree, then came to rest facing the opposite direction on the edge of the roadway. The incident report lists the estimated speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash at 75 miles per hour but states it was a 25 mile-per-hour zone.

Both victims were unrestrained and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, Kraus said.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash.

Wheeler was a senior at Wando High School and Gooch was a former student, Charleston County School District spokesperson Andy Pruitt said. Counselors were available to students Monday afternoon, he said.
