Bicyclist killed in fatal North Charleston accident identified

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have identified the bicyclist who died in an accident Sunday in North Charleston.

Bryan Owens, 32, died from injuries sustained in an accident involving an SUV shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Dorchester Road and Paramount Road, according to North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor.

The bicyclist was on the sidewalk traveling east on Dorchester Road while the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban was stopped at a red light on Paramount Road, he said. When the light turned green, the Suburban accelerated through the light but the bicyclist did not to stop and crossed in front of the Suburban and was struck, he said.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the Suburban, but North Charleston police continue to investigate the incident.
