Expert: Warning signs of teacher-student sexual relationship hard to detect

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - It's difficult to find out if your child is having a sexual relationship with a teacher, according to an expert on the subject.

Fifty-one year old Donald Blair Sr., a mechatronics teacher at Goose Creek High School is accused of having sex with a student a school in 2014 and 2015.

"I think for parents, when this happens it's completely out of left field because it's not really what tested expecting," Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center executive director Carole Swiecicki said.

According to court affidavits, the female student was 15 and 16 when she had sex with Blair in his classroom.
The court papers state she reported the consensual sex to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office on August 10 of this year.

Other students told investigators they saw the teacher and student go behind closed doors in Blair's classroom two to three times a week and stayed there for twenty to thirty minutes.

Blair is the second Goose Creek High official accused of having sex with a student.

Earlier this month, former assistant principal Paul Herman was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to having sex with a 16 year old student.

"Unfortunately grownups, they don't always have the best intentions in mind. So unfortunately what takes it to the next level is an adult who makes a really bad decision," Swiecicki said.

One day after Blair's arrest, it was the talk on the school's campus.

"I was pretty disgusted. I thought it was like really scary," senior Sarah Martin said.

"You never know when stuff like that is really that close to you," senior Thomas Little said.

Swiecicki says the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a teacher aren't obvious.

She says parents need to look for changes in their child's behavior.

"If your child's feeling afraid to be with that teacher, if they're really feeling uncomfortable saying I don't want to go to this class, you know trying to find out what's going on with that."

And if your fears turn out to be true, Swiecicki says get your child help immediately.

Bailey is charged with sexual battery with a student and criminal sexual conduct third degree.

He's free on $20,000 bond and on leave from the school district.
