BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office says the body found at a boat landing has been identified as a Goose Creek High School teacher.

Authorities identified the body as Donald Blair Sr.

The Berkeley County Coroner said Blair died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday that Blair had been charged and accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

Blair's body was found in the area of the Cypress Gardens Boat Landing in Moncks Corner.

Authorities say a K-9 unit found Blair's body in the woods near the boat landing Wednesday afternoon.

Crime scene tape marked the area of the woods where the body was found.

A blue Dodge Charger was being processed near the scene.

CSI's were spotted going through the car, looking for possible evidence.

People in the area said they did not hear any gunshots. Many were surprised to see deputies there.

"We thought something was going on and he called his sister and they said there was a news alert about a dead body," said Dayne Caddell, a boater.

"We were coming to look for sharks' teeth and saw the cops here," said Justin Martin."Looked it up on TV and just heard about it five minutes ago."

Officials with the Berkeley County School District had called deputies earlier to do a welfare check on Blair because he failed to come to an appointment.

The school district released the following statement:

District officials received report of Mr. Blair’s passing Wednesday morning, August 24. As this is a deeply private and personal matter for the Blair family and the faculty and students of Goose Creek High School, we ask that you respect their privacy during this time. Grief counselors are available to our faculty and students at Goose Creek High, and we will continue to offer support to them as they process this news.

Blair was on administrative leave from Goose Creek High School after he was charged with criminal sexual conduct and sexual battery.

According to the sheriff's office, detectives were investigating a complaint from a student in reference to a consensual sexual relationship between Blair and a female victim.

Investigators believe Blair engaged in a sexual relationship with the student, who was 15 at the time, in late 2014 and early 2015.

The relationship took place on the grounds of Goose Creek High School, investigators say.
