The organization released the following information on the event:
The national river conservation organization American Rivers will join Charleston Waterkeeper, Keep Dorchester County Beautiful and local citizens on September 17 to clean up trash from the Ashley Scenic River between Jessen Landing and the future Ashley River Park site. Both land-based and water-based cleanup opportunities are available as a part of Keep Dorchester County Beautiful's annual cleanup. The event is part of American Rivers' National River Cleanup® 25th Anniversary Celebration.
Keep Dorchester Beautiful has been cleaning up the Ashley River for more than a decade and this year's event represents the fourth time the cleanup has been conducted in coordination with American Rivers. Last year roughly 4,500 pounds of trash were removed by scores of volunteers.
Kayaks and shuttle service are available for those interested in participating in a 3.5 mile paddle, which will culminate with pristine views of the Ashley River Park site's expansive riverfront. Volunteers should arrive at Jessen Landing at 8am to depart on time. Volunteers will remove litter while en route to the site. Dorchester County Parks and Recreation Director Eric Davis states, "I would personally like to thank Nature Adventure Outfitters for donating the kayaks and shuttle service for this worthy cause. We'll have our work cut out for us removing the litter that has accumulated once again, but it will be a fun and rewarding stewardship experience on our river." Pre-registration is required and can be completed by contacting Mr. Davis at firstname.lastname@example.org
National River Cleanup is a program that engages local volunteers to keep rivers and streams trash-free. This year is the 25th anniversary of National River Cleanup. See www.AmericanRivers.org/cleanup for more information.
