One dead after officer-involved shooting in North Charleston

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police say one man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Friday night.

According NCPD, officers responded to 2181 Dunlap Street at the Plantation Flats Apartment Homes in reference to a man in the breezeway of an apartment building shooting a gun at 11:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they reported seeing the suspect, a Hispanic man, leaving the complex in a vehicle.

Police said officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the man would not stop.

A report states the suspect then drove back into the apartment complex, got out of the car and led police on a chase.

According to police, the man fired his handgun at officers, officers then fired back.

The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported a large police presence in the area during the incident.

According to residents nearby, investigators were at the scene until 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in and is handling the investigation.

The coroner has not released the identity of the deceased victim.

Officials with the Charleston County Coroner's Office say the investigation remains ongoing and in the early stages.

"SLED continues in their investigation and more information will be released as available," CCCO officials said.
