CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Michael Slager's defense team won't get documents regarding the City of North Charleston's lawsuit settlement with Walter Scott's family, a judge ruled Friday.
Slager, a former North Charleston police officer is charged with murder in the April, 2015 shooting death of Walter Scott.
The city and the Scott family reached a $6.5 million settlement in October, 2015.
Slager's defense team issued a subpoena to the City of North Charleston, asking for the lawsuit settlement documents.
The ex-cop's lawyers say those documents may be important for their defense in his trial.
Lawyers for the City of North Charleston countered that the documents should not be released based on attorney-client privilege.
Judge Clifton Newman sided eyes the city and quashed the subpoena Friday afternoon.
Slager's state trial is scheduled for October 31. He is also facing federal charges.
The date of the federal trial will be scheduled in 2017.
