CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical wave expected to form into a tropical depression within the next five days.

The wave was near the Cabo Verde Islands at 2 p.m. Wednesday, NHC officials said.

"No significant development" was expected during the next couple of days, but conditions are forecast to become more favorable for gradual development, leading forecasters to place a 70 percent chance of formation over the next five days.

That would mean the tropical depression could form by the weekend as the storm moves west-northwest toward the central Atlantic.
