SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Lowcountry gave back to a Gold Star family in need Saturday.
Neighbors in Summerville gathered to help break the ground on a brand new home for the Freiwald family.
Stacey Freiwald lost her husband, Chief Petty Officer Jason Freiwald, on a mission in Afghanistan back in September of 2008.
CPO Freiwald began his service with the U.S. Navy in 1996 and served with SEAL Team 3, SEAL Team 5 and SEAL Team 6.
"I feel so happy, I'm relieved. I'm looking forward to a new life and a new start, move someplace completely new and have a new beginning," Freiwald said.
The home will be mortgage-free, and it is part of a new Built to Honor program. The Built to Honor program builds homes for wounded veterans and their families throughout the country.
The project is in partnership with Military Warriors Support Foundation, with support from PulteGroup's trade partners and will build, decorate, and donate the new townhouse.
Stacey and her 11-year-old daughter Jasmine will be moving from Virginia to the Lowcountry.
