WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro Police say no charges will be filed after a man who allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend and was killed by her current boyfriend.
Richard Roscoe, 34, was found dead near a Crosby Street home in the Pine Brook Mobile Home Park Tuesday morning, the Colleton County Coroner says.
A police spokeswoman says the incident is being treated as a case of self-defense.
The victim, Brittany Walling told officers she heard dogs barking and looked out of her window at 1 a.m. Tuesday to find her ex-boyfriend crouching near her vehicle.
"I yelled at him and told him to leave, and that's when he grabbed the mailbox and started chucking it.
The mailbox hit one of Walling's windows.
Police say Roscoe slashed the tires on her car and her boyfriend's pickup truck, and then demanded to be let inside her home.
"Banging on the door, like ended up kicking it five or six times and busted the door and came in," Walling said. "That's when he grabbed my boyfriend and threw him down and started punching him and punching him."
Walling says she tried to break up the fight.
"I just seen my boyfriend basically get the crap beaten out of him," Walling said.
Walling says her boyfriend got hold of a knife and stabbed Roscoe.
Police say he ran out of the trailer and collapsed and died behind a nearby mobile home.
Walling believes her boyfriend saved her life.
"Seeing him, I don't know, scared, don't know how to feel you know?" she said. "Stressed, I don't know. I feel sick. He probably saved my life, no telling."
The suspect, Roscoe has a long criminal record including arrests for criminal domestic violence and assault and battery second degree this year.
He also served time in prison for burglary.
