CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The victim in a downtown shooting late Wednesday night has been identified.

Stephen Grant, 34, died after being transporting to MUSC, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Sheila Williams confirmed.

Charleston Police responded to the shooting late Wednesday night on Hanover Street, police spokesman Charles Francis said. Charleston Consolidated Dispatch received a report of shots fired at approximately 10:45 p.m. near Hanover and Columbus Streets.

Grant was taken to MUSC, Francis said, while investigators on the scene gathered information about why the shooting may have happened and any witness accounts of a possible gunman.

No information on a suspect or motive has been released as yet.

Neighbors said they heard about six gunshots and at first thought it was on television. They say many college students live in the immediate area.
