JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - James Island Town Council met Thursday night to talk chickens.
Council members passed the first reading of an ordinance that would allow residents to own hens within the town limits, assuming the birds are confined to residents' back yards and pens and coops meet all required regulations.
Roosters, however, would be banned within town limits.
The proposal must survive at least one more reading before it is approved.
Council members also said they would hold a workshop to meet with chicken owners to come up with a permitting process and rules for keeping chickens.
