COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It was a successful night for honoring our nation's heroes in the Capital City.

Early Friday evening, Lincoln Street was alive in Columbia's Vista. Thousands of walkers and runners crossed the finish line, closing out the fourth annual 'Tunnel to Towers 5K.'

"It's just awesome. It's awesome for what it stands for and the charities that these events donate to. It really hits home,” Bluffton Firefighter David Adams said.

The yearly race honors the memory of New York firefighter Stephen Siller who died during the 9/11 attacks. Several area firefighters were among those taking part in this evening's walk and run.

"To be able to come and support a cause like this and show not just Americans, but everyone else around this world that America's great,” Lexington County Firefighter Antoine Kelly explained. “Through trials like that we can come together and be able to put something together so amazing as 'Tunnels to Towers' it's just something rewarding.”

Proceeds raised from the race go to support a number of programs offered through the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.  That includes ones that help orphaned children as well as our nation's wounded veterans.
