SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Residents in the Magnolia Place Apartments say they're on edge after a deadly shooting Saturday morning.
The Dorchester County Coroner identified Stefon Chapman, 21, as the victim found with a gunshot wound to the chest.
"It was a really rapid succession," said one woman who lives in the complex. "Seemed to be seven or eight shots."
None of the neighbors wanted to show their faces on camera, but said what happened has many people concerned.
"My two daughters woke me up screaming and crying that they heard shots out the window," said Caroline, of Summerville.
"I was just really scared because I thought it could be anyone in the neighborhood," said Tiffany, Caroline's daughter. "I was really worried it could be my friends, or someone I'm really close to."
Police found Chapman, with a gunshot wound in the backyard behind the Magnolia Place Apartment Complex.
Neighbors think there may have been a shootout in front of building A, which left two bullet holes in the window, and multiple shell cases on the pavement.
A maintenance worker told residents the bullets went through one apartment and into a second apartment before lodging in a brick wall at the rear of the building.
"Some people say it sounded like two guns," Caroline said.
Blood stains could also be seen on the fence behind the building. Neighbors feel Chapman could have been trying to get away when he died.
"My prayers go out to the family," one neighbor said. "It's just a horrible thing when people take life with such little regard. It's all too common."
Those who live in the complex say it's relatively quiet. However, this shooting comes more than a week after an armed robbery nearly 100 yards from the complex.
"Yeah that was scary to have two incidents this close," Caroline said.
Now some renters in the complex are taking extra safety precautions.
"We're locking our doors better and keeping our eyes out for people," Tiffany said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Summerville Police Department.
