Berkeley County open shelters, adds sandbag locations ahead of Hurricane Matthew

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Berkeley County authorities opened shelters on Wednesdayas Hurricane Matthew continues its slow approach toward the United States coastline.

The county's emergency operations center is operating at OpCon 1, its most alert operating condition.

A shelter for people with special medical needs will open at Westview Primary School at 98 Westview Boulevard, in Goose Creek. This shelter is for people who require an attendant with them.

Additional shelters include:

  • Westview Middle - 101 Westview Boulevard, Goose Creek, SC
  • Berkeley Elementary - 715 Main Street, Moncks Corner, SC
  • Berkeley Middle - 320 North Live Oak Drive, Moncks Corner, SC
  • St. Stephen Elementary - 1053 Russellville Road, St. Stephen, SC
  • Cainhoy Elementary - 2434 Cainhoy Road, Huger, SC

For people with pets, Cane Bay High will operate as an animal-friendly shelter. It is located at 1624 State Road in Summerville. All animals must be caged.

Berkeley County also added four additional locations for sandbag distribution. The full list of sites for sandbags is as follows:

  • Bonneau Fire Department, 420 Municipal Lane, Bonneau, SC
  • C & B Fire Department, 509 Royle Road, Ladson, SC
  • Caromi Fire Department, 554 College Park Road, Ladson, SC
  • City of Hanahan, Yeamans Hall and Robinson, Hanahan, SC
  • Cordesville Fire Department, 1931 Highway 402, Moncks Corner, SC
  • Cross Fire Department, 1007 Short Cut Road, Cross, SC
  • Forty-One Fire Department, 1192 Forty One Road, Bonneau, SC
  • Huger Rural Fire Department, 1004 United Drive, Huger, SC
  • Lake Moultrie Fire Department, 942 Black Oak Road, Bonneau, SC
  • Macedonia Fire Department, 2108 North Highway 17A, Bonneau, SC
  • Town of Moncks Corner Fire Department, 118 Carolina Avenue, Moncks Corner, SC
  • Whitesville Fire Department, 115 Sunview Avenue, Moncks Corner, SC
