ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Thousands of Marines and new recruits will ride out Hurricane Matthew in Albany.

Six thousand evacuees from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina are on their way to the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany.

Base officials were awaiting the arrival of the 6,000 recruits expected to come through the gate at MCLB.

Colonels and an advance group of 30 were already there Wednesday night.

The last evacuation was in 2012 when around 3,000 from Pensacola came to Albany to escape Hurricane Issac.

The commanding general at MCRD gave an evacuation order for Parris Island around midday on Wednesday.

Officials said that having a nearby base is critical.

"If we don't know exactly where we're going then we have no idea the facilities that are available for us and we'd have to invent that all at the same time as we're considering the possibilities of a storm and the damage, the different directions we'll have to go in order to evacuate the marines," said MCRD Commanding Officer of Service Battalion Edward Jeep.

Despite being off their original base, officers from Parris Island planned to continue training and drills.

The last time they had to evacuate was in 2000.

Officials plan to watch the storm and measure the damage at their base before deciding when to return to South Carolina.
